Matcha Milk Bubble Tea with Boba Recipe - The Ultimate Guide

Hi, matcha lover!

How do you enjoy matcha in your daily life?

These days, matcha bubble (boba) milk tea has been getting popular everywhere. This drink is a fusion of Taiwan and Japanese since Boba tea, also known as bubble tea is originally from Taiwan.

You could get matcha boba milk tea at the Boba shop easily, and pretty good. But you could easily make your original matcha milk bubble tea with simple ingredients.

I would like to introduce how to make matcha bubble milk tea in this article!

What is matcha milk bubble (boba) tea?

Typically, sweetened black tea is used to make the original boba tea. To make matcha bubble milk tea, matcha powder, which is earthy and slightly bitter, is combined with milk. It is sweetened to create a well-balanced flavor and served with chewy tapioca pearls.

Many people love it because of the taste of matcha and letting your concentration be higher.

What is matcha and how does it affect us?

Matcha is a finely ground powder, carefully produced, and processed green tea leaves.

Different from green tea leaves, matcha could dissolve completely in water to produce a smooth beverage. Matcha has the same health advantages as green tea.

It provides potent antioxidants, strengthens the heart, encourages a healthy cholesterol level, enhances skin health, and more.

What are tapioca pearls?

Tapioca pearls, or boba, are also known as tapioca balls. Tapioca starch and sugar are used for making tapioca balls. They turn into chewy, black, semi-translucent balls after cooking.

Why you would enjoy making matcha milk bubble tea?

  • Matcha milk tea has just the right amount of sweetness and is pleasantly fragrant.
  • Matcha is a fantastic way to start the day and a powerful antioxidant!
  • It's the ideal way to brighten up an afternoon. With just the right amount of caffeine, this matcha milk tea will give you a boost without making you feel jittery.
  • You could drink either hot or served over ice, as well as the milk and sweetener. You would enjoy drinking on any occasion!
  • The iced version can be served as green tea milk tea or bubble tea. So you can enjoy different varieties!
  • Drinking matcha at home is less expensive than going to the coffee shop every day.

What do you need to prepare?

  • Matcha powder
  • Hot water – To blend the matcha into a smooth liquid, you would need a small amount of hot water to mix into both hot and cold milk.
  • Sweetener – you can use honey or vanilla stevia syrup, granulated stevia, cane sugar, simple syrup (plain or flavored), coconut sugar, real maple syrup, date sugar, or brown sugar to sweeten things.
  • Milk – The sweet flavor of oat milk harmonizes wonderfully with the bitterness of matcha. For this beverage, you can also use dairy milk, soy milk, or almond milk.
  • Tapioca pearls

What kinds of special equipment you would need to prepare?

  • Sieve
  • Whisk - To dissolve the matcha powder, I strongly advise purchasing a bamboo matcha whisk. It greatly simplifies the procedure and completely dissolves the matcha powder.

You could also mix the matcha powder and milk directly in a blender if you own one. If you plan to make a large batch of matcha drinks, it comes in quite handy.

I do not recommend dissolving matcha powder with a spoon or fork because the powder doesn't dissolve fully.

Additionally, if the matcha powder is not completely dissolved, it will quickly separate when the milk is added.

How to make the best matcha bubble milk tea

Ingredients - 2 servings

  • 1/3 cup tapioca pearls
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or sugar, or sweetener)
  • 2 to 4 teaspoons of matcha powder, divided
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup hot water
  • 2 cups of milk
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring the tapioca pearls to a boil.
  2. After rinsing with cold tap water, drain the tapioca pearls.
  3. Fill the serving glass with the tapioca pearls.
  4. Mix the powdered matcha. If you would like to have a light, frothy consistency, add the matcha powder to a sieve and sift it into a mug.
  5. Pour the steaming water. Blend the matcha until it dissolves and becomes smooth, using a handheld milk frother or matcha whisk.
  6. After adding the sweetener and ¼ cup of milk, stir the mixture and refrigerate until it gets cold.
  7. Fill a serving glass with ice when it's time to put the drink together.
  8. Then pour in the chilled matcha mixture and the remaining ¾ cup of milk. Mix it thoroughly or not, then take a seat and observe the magic happen!

Tips and Notes

Be careful not to overcook tapioca pearls

Before making the drink, make the boba balls just like guided on the package to make a matcha milk bubble tea. Unfortunately, prepared boba balls don't last very long.

Marinate the tapioca pearls to make tea much better

The tapioca pearls from a boba tea shop are typically sweetened, as you will notice. To get a sweet flavor, it's customary to marinate cooked tapioca pearls in sugar syrup for half an hour when cooking them at home.

To marinate the cooked tapioca pearls for this recipe, I simply added them to each serving glass along with the sweetener. The procedure is slightly shortened, and the outcome is favorable.

FAQs

How can I prevent the clumps of matcha?

Incorrect storage of matcha powder results in a decline in quality and toughening and clumping of the ground tea leaves. This also occurs when the powder isn't thoroughly dissolved in hot water after being sifted into the cup. The simplest solution for a clumpy matcha drink is to blend it smooth in a high-speed blender or strain it through a fine-mesh sieve.

Can I add collagen peptides?

Yes! Collagen peptides, like matcha powder, must be dissolved in hot water before they can be mixed with cold beverages. However, it is best to add a scoop of collagen peptides when mixing matcha green tea powder with hot water, or if making a hot matcha latte, add it while steaming the milk.

Is it possible to make matcha bubble milk tea in advance?

Yes, but you have to keep tapioca pearls and matcha milk tea separately. You could blend just matcha and milk and store it in the fridge.

For the tapioca pearls, check the package carefully to ensure you are not making them too far in advance. When using the regular type of tapioca pearls, you can store them for up to a day, however, if you use the instant type, you can usually store them for a few hours. The tapioca pearls in maple syrup (or sugar syrup) should only be kept at room temperature. If the pearls are kept in the refrigerator, they would get very stiff.
