Iced Matcha (Cold Brew Matcha) - The Ultimate Guide

Have you ever drunk iced matcha (cold brew matcha) before?

The hot matcha is much more common than iced matcha. People were not used to having tea ceremonies during summer since hot matcha was too hot to have during that time.

But, afterward, some people start having iced matcha in a tea ceremony, especially during summer. It makes people refresh and helps to beat the heat. Therefore, cold brew matcha would be great for overcoming hot seasons and the time you want to refresh yourself.

In this article, I would like to explain how to make iced matcha (Cold Brew Matcha)!

About this Iced Matcha (Cold Brew Matcha)

To make iced matcha (cold brew matcha), all you need is matcha, ice, and cold water.

This version is made exactly like the hot whisked matcha drink, which also doesn't add anything sweet. Therefore, you are welcome to add a small amount of sweetener, such as honey or sugar.

As matcha is traditionally enjoyed with sweet foods, I suggest pairing your iced matcha with a piece of cake or some sweet mochi for dessert.

There are 2 ways of making Iced matcha. The first one is using cold water. Another is using hot water and ice cubes. The first one would be easy if you do want to make it quick. But you can choose how to make Cold Brew Matcha on your preference! It would be fun to try both methods to see the differences!

Why You Should Make The Recipe

Iced matcha would be a great drink to refresh your mind and body. In addition, matcha has strong antioxidants, heart support, promoting a healthy cholesterol level, improved skin health, and many more benefits!

What You Have to Prep for Iced Matcha

  • Matcha
  • Water: For better-tasting iced matcha, use filtered water whenever possible.
  • Ice cubes

Helpful Equipment to Use

  • Sieve
  • Whisk I strongly recommend getting a bamboo matcha whisk to dissolve the matcha powder. It dissolves the matcha powder completely and makes the process much easier.

FAQs

How can I cope with clumpy matcha?

The quality of matcha powder decreases as a result of improper storage, which also causes the ground tea leaves to become tougher and more clumpy.

This also tends to happen if you sift the powder into the cup and don't fully dissolve it in hot water. The easiest way to deal with a clumpy matcha drink is to either strain it through a fine-mesh sieve or blend it smoothly in a high-speed blender.

What sweetener I should use?

If you would like to make your matcha sweeten, you could add honey or sugar.

I also recommend pairing matcha with sweets such as mochi, and cakes as a traditional way of having matcha.

My favorite is Wagashi, which is a Japanese confection. Particularly, the sweetened "azuki" (or red beans) go really well with matcha. It would give your matcha a nice balance.
