Green Bubble Tea - The Ultimate Guide

At the end of the summer, I saw the long line in front of the boba shop. There was one new popular boba shop near the station in my hometown. It was the time bubble tea was introduced from Taiwan.

When I realized this, I became one of the people in the line to get boba, since I could not stop my curiosity about boba such as the taste of boba, and the ingredients boba is made of. I found out that the taste was sweet. it goes well with green tea!

What is Green Bubble Tea (Green Tea Boba)?

Green Bubble tea is a combination of green tea and boba. Taiwan is the place for the invention of bubble tea because of its rich tea and food cultures from the 1980s. It gained worldwide popularity not long after it was made.

In addition to its most well-known name, bubble tea is also known as pearl milk tea, bubble milk tea, and boba tea. It's a milkーor tea-based beverage with chewy tapioca pearls and a variety of flavored toppings. Taiwanese slang for pearls is "boba," which is another name for these pearls.

What Is Tapioca Pearls or Boba?

In their most basic form, boba, or the pearls themselves, are produced from a mixture of water, brown sugar, and starches.

The ingredients are combined and formed into tiny balls, which are then cooked in water to produce a glossy, chewy, and gummy texture. Because of its soft and supple texture, tapioca starch, which is derived from cassava root, is the primary starch.

However, sweet potato starch is occasionally added to give it a firm finish. Conversely, the dark caramel color that is distinctive to boba is a result of the brown sugar.

Why You Should Make This Recipe

  • Simple instructions for making tapioca pearls:  I will help you make them successful every time with the recipe!
  • Excellent matcha flavor: This drink has the perfect balance of creamy milk, tiny sweet bits of boba, and the earthy sweetness of matcha.
  • Lots of boba: Since you're preparing this at home, you can guarantee that there are lots of boba in your drink! It's the most enjoyable part, and when I get one where they were a little sparse with the boba, I wouldn't say I like it.
  • You get to choose the sweetness: I like having control over the sweetness because I sometimes find matcha boba tea to be too sweet.
  • Cost-effective: You can make a large batch of delectable green tea boba for the same amount of money as you would pay for one from a boba shop!

Ingredients and Substitutions In This Recipe

  • Matcha powder: This recipe recommends a high-quality matcha powder and culinary-grade matcha is ideal for this purpose. In traditional matcha, ceremonial-grade matcha should only be used with water.
  • Tapioca pearls: Made from tapioca starch, these are tiny, chewy balls. The cassava root is the source of this starch. Some grocery stores carry them, or you could order from online.
  • Sweetener: You can sweeten with honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, brown or white sugar, or any other sweetener of your choice.

Useful Equipment to Have

  • A large pot (with a lid)
  • Sieve
  • Whisk - I highly suggest getting a bamboo matcha whisk to dissolve the matcha powder. It dissolves the matcha powder perfectly and makes the process much simpler.

Green Bubble Tea (Green Tea Boba) Recipe

  1. You should first prepare the sweetener. Suppose you're considering using sugar. For both, use the same ratio of 1:1 sugar to water. You can decide how much you want your tea to be sweet.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and half a cup of water. Turn the heat to medium and stir until the sugar dissolves completely. After taking the pan off of the burner, leave the simple syrup to cool.
  3. Make the tapioca pearls. Next, heat three cups of water to a boil on high. When the tapioca pearls begin to float to the top, add them and stir. Now cook the tapioca pearls for 12 minutes on medium heat. After removing from the heat, cover and leave for an additional twelve minutes. After draining, place the cooled tapioca pearls in a bowl with the sugar syrup and set aside to cool.
  4. Make Green Tea. Whisk 1 tablespoon matcha powder with 1/4 cup water together and get rid of clumps. If you have a sieve, you can use it for matcha powder to prevent clumps beforehand.  After that, add the remaining water and whisk to thoroughly combine.
  5. Transfer the pearls into a cup and top with your matcha. If you prefer it cold, add some ice cubes. Taste your homemade bubble tea with green tea!

Tips and Notes

Tips for matcha powder: To prevent the matcha leaves from settling while you're waiting, I suggest waiting until right before you're ready to serve the boba tea.

FAQs

Can I Make Boba With Different Kinds of Tea?

Green teas (matcha, jasmine), oolong teas, and black teas (Earl Gray, chai, and breakfast tea) are by far the most often used types of tea.

Try this matcha boba recipe or a black tea to start if you're new to boba tea. To make this with a different tea, just proceed as directed until you reach the matcha preparation step.

Alternatively, steep your preferred tea in one cup of hot water (per serving) until it's the perfect brew. Before serving, allow the tea to reach room temperature to avoid letting the ice melt too much and diluting the tea. To serve, top each glass of bubble tea with 1/3 cup of tapioca pearls. If you would like to add milk, place a cup of your preferred tea on top, followed by a cup of non-dairy milk or creamer.

How Can I Keep Boba If I Want To Drink The Tea Later?

It's good to serve boba later in the day because you can store it in the simple syrup for up to 12 hours. Overnight, Boba does not fare well.
