- Milk frother: You can use any type of milk frother to whip up the milk. You can also use an immersion blender, a simple handheld frother, or a hand whisk, or shake the milk in a mason jar until it froths.
- Spice grinder: You would need this for grinding spices and seeds! If you have spices already ground, you probably do not have to use them.
How To Make A Matcha Chai Tea Latte
Ingredients - 2 servings
- 1/4–1/2 tsp of fennel seeds
- 1/2 tsp of black peppercorns
- 10–12 green cardamom pods
- 2 star anise seeds
- 10–12 cloves
- 3" piece of cinnamon stick
- 1/8" piece of nutmeg
- 1" piece of fresh
- Peeled ginger
- 5-8 fresh mint leaves
- 1 tsp of black tea
- Sweetener on your preference (Ex) raw sugar, maple syrup, etc..
- Warm one cup of milk of choice
- Two teaspoons of ceremonial-grade matcha powder
Instruction
- Prepare Masala Chai Spice Mix – In a dry pan over medium heat, toast all of your spices until fragrant, about 5 to 7 minutes. Shake the pan frequently to prevent any spices from burning, especially the fennel seeds, which are the smallest and most likely to burn.
- After the spices become fragrant and lightly toasted, turn off the heat and allow to cool for five to six minutes.
- After transferring the spices to a coffee or spice grinder, pulse them until a fine powder forms. This is the mixture of spices you have.
- Bring 1 cup of water (enough for 2 servings) to a boil, or measure out the water using the cup you plan to serve in a small pot. Measure out the water using half of the serving, then pour it into a pot and bring it to a gentle boil.
- Once the water is simmering, add the sugar, black tea, fresh mint leaves, and grated fresh ginger, according to taste. Add the warmed milk as the water begins to boil. To prevent the milk from burning on the bottom of the pot, use the same amount of plant milk as water and stir continuously. Add 1/4 tsp of the spice mixture for masala chai.
- After bringing the mixture to a vigorous boil, turn down the heat. Again, repeat for two complete boils. Take off from the heat source and allow the tea to steep for a while.
- Using a fine sieve, strain your mixture and add more sweetener to taste. This is how you can enjoy a traditional hot chai.
Masala Chai Matcha Latte
- Sift ceremonial-grade matcha into a bowl using a fine sieve and add 1/2 cup hot, but not boiling, water. For approximately one minute, use a bamboo stir to in an M-shaped motion, until the matcha is completely submerged in the water and a lovely layer of froth forms on top of it.
- To serve, make two glasses of ice, divide and pour the matcha and masala chai over the ice in each glass, then repeat with the whisked matcha.
